ISDL'99: Call for Participation

International Symposium on Digital Libraries 1999 (ISDL'99)

September 28-29, 1999
University of Library and Information Science, Tsukuba, Japan
Sponsored by University of Library and Information Science http://www.DL.ulis.ac.jp/ISDL99/

Digital Libraries are widely recognized as a crucial component of a Global Information Infrastructure for the next century. Research and development projects in many parts of the world are testing new ways of using advanced information technologies such as high-performance computers, multimedia, hypermedia, and artificial intelligence to organize and share information over networks. The success of digital libraries depends not just on technology, but on social and cultural factors such as intellectual property rights and collection policies. Digital Libraries are often discussed as research projects for the future, but many projects have already learned significant lessons from deployment. As the largest producers and consumers of scientific information, universities play a crucial role in the digital library environment.

This symposium will provide an international forum for papers and discussions by researchers, developers and practitioners in and for Digital Libraries. The symposium topics are not limited, and may include

  1. Digital Libraries and wide-area and high-performance networks
  2. Storage and communication technologies for a wide variety of and vast amounts of multimedia information,
  3. Digital information in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences,
  4. Editing, organizing, publishing, access, and computer-human interaction technologies for multimedia information,
  5. Information technologies for multi-cultural and multi-lingual information for worldwide information sharing,
  6. Digital library functions as a common ground for intellectual activities,
  7. Roles of, and restrictions on, the digital library in communities.
  8. Higher education environment for networked information society
The University of Library and Information Science (ULIS) will celebrate its twentieth anniversary in October 1999 with a four-day International Symposium on Libraries for Networked Information Society (ISLNIS, September 27-30). This broader event will include both the International Symposium on Digital Libraries 1999 (ISDL'99, September 28-29) and a related International Symposium on Roles of Libraries for Japan and Asia (September 30, 1999)(notes).
