Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of trends in the use of digital libraries in medicine and health care, using examples chosen primarily from North American experience, with a few examples from Japanese practice. The trends fall into five categories: clinical digital libraries; digital research libraries; digital libraries for education; digital libraries of patient and consumer health information; and digital libraries that enhance traditional medical libraries. In addition, five areas of social concern with respect to digital medical libraries are briefly discussed: cost, design, access, quality control, and indexing issues. A list of URLs and selected readings accompany the paper.

Abstract

In this paper, the author describes the outline of Digital Library of Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST). The Digital Library of NAIST is in operation from April of 1996. The statistics of the library and some consideration based on the experiences are also described.

Abstract

Digital Libraries need easy and low-price methods of digitizing large number of books and magazines, and thus, raw (not-modified) OCR texts are used for full-text search functions. In this paper, we propose to use hypotheses of characters (character lattices) instead of a raw OCR text to achieve higher rate of successful search. The experimental results tested on the prototype of the document image database system show that the accuracy of the character lattice (of which size was 4.02 times larger than that of the true text) was 99.2% even if the character recognition rate was 93.2%, and the rate of successful search was 97.8%.

Abstract

The publishing division of the "Joho Kanri" journal at JICST has developed a set of Document Type Definition (DTD) and an experimental SGML-based publishing tool as a prototype of the next generation publishing environment, which will have tools for efficient editing, publishing and delivery of the journal and for publishing in multiple media, e.g., printed paper, fulltext database, CD-ROM, and WWW. The division has published an issue of "Joho Kanri" (Vol.38, No.8) encoded in SGML based on the DTD via CD-ROM and the Internet in parallel with publishing in print. The division has been working on evaluation of usability of SGML in the writing and editing processes and parallel production of the printed and electronic journals. This paper describes the experimental publishing tools and discusses key aspects based on the experiences on the tools.

Abstract

It is natural that digital libraries storage and supply documents in digital format from the beginning, but It is also necessary that a huge amount of old ``paper documents'' information can be searched by digital library.

We propose and develop a integrated digitaizing system ``Information Factory'' for a part of digital libary concept ``Universal Library''. it integrates scanning process, OCR process, structurizing process and storing process and it aims at easily digitizing documents for non-professional computer users.

Abstract

"Asahi Shimbun Headline Database 1945-1995" is a database of all headlines in The Asahi Shimbun reduced-size collective edition (Shukusatuban),issued monthly. When you search an article carried during the 50 years after World War II, just type a keyword, then you can get the article's publication date, page number, and colum position in the newspaper. This databse covers almost 3,070,000 headlines. We provided this database with fast full-text search method. It is used on-line system in The Asahi Shimbun. CD-ASAX, a set of 5 CD-ROMs , is also available.
